I had to reinstall my home Dell Dimension 8300 again from scratch with Dell’s Windows XP SP1 disk plus the upgrade from Microsoft, which was SP3. Not surprisingly, I got problems with my Pinnacle Moviebox DV (it acts as a AVC compliant DV video camera on Firewire/1394) as I did have them with SP2 upgrade. (more…)

My Dell Latitude D610 (ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300 – BK-ATI VER0008.017M.192.062) was upgraded by admins to Windows XP SP3. Small side effect was that the secondary dispay started flickering and its 90 degrees rotation disappeared. I took the rotation away and the dual screen worked again. Unfortunately it was not possible to set the rotation back on. Dell does not provide any driver upgrade and the AMD/ATI driver does not install. I am not the only one.

I have a Nokia N95 (N95-1) with firmware v21.0.015. I have recently installed my Windows XP machine from scratch with SP3. That gave me the opportunity to upgrade all my Nokia PC support software with the latest versions. (more…)

8.04 32-bit Hardy Heron installed out of the box on Dell Dimension 8300 with NVDIA video and Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS sound cards. Not surprisingly, there was no sound. I looked at the posts of the earlier versions and it appears that the same feature has survived all the way from the 7.10 version. You need to:

  • Set Rhytmbox to play your favorite music (that you cannot hear, obviously)
  • Double click on the loudspeaker icon to open the Volume Control property dialog
  • Click on the Switches tab
  • Click on the check box Audigy Analog/Digital Output jack in order to toggle it. Go ahead, toggle it for a couple of times. Didn’t work for you? Sorry about that but these things are really hairy.

Out of the box installation of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron had few problems on my Dell Dimension 8300 (with bad-bad-bad NVidia proprietary driver activated). This is how I resolved the issued of the system never waking up from the Suspend mode, by sudo vi /etc/default/acpi-support. Here’s the diff(1): (more…)

We need to repeatedly install a various number of 147 GB SAS disks and a LSI 3041 controller on our systems. I have written a script to help the intervening maintenance personnels with the Red Hat 5 post-install RAID-0 configuration. The script is attached to this post. Of course, you can do the work manually, without the script. For the record, here’s what the script does with explanation: (more…)

If you have – like me – a Windows SharePoint 2.0 Inranet server with a non-crypted URL, such as http://mysharepoint.myintranet.com and you are using Windows Vista, you may have experienced authentication problems when trying to map your Shared Documents as a network drive. (more…)

Violon 1010 DRAM/Flash Memory Appliance

If you got a big wallet, that is.

Violin 1010 is the first (and therefore probably out of price) Memory Appliance with mixed DRAM and NAND Flash technology. It provides 504 GB of DRAM in a 2 U chassis. Its PCI-Express interface allows it to be connected directly on the data acquisition system, for example on a Trenton MCXT PICMG-1.3 computer which sports a four lane PCI-Express connection in the front panel. Since a few months now I have been waiting Nokia to come up with a v20.0.015 firmware upgrade for my Orange (France) branded Nokia N95. The upgrade is available for non-branded N95 for a while now. I wanted to test the new version of the native browser so badly that I unbranded my phone and forced the upgrade. (more…)
